Pixar has unveiled RenderMan 24, introducing a revolutionary rendering architecture called RenderMan XPU. This update brings exciting new features, including the ability to harness both CPU and GPU resources, delivering instant feedback through live rendering, and a new shading system for layered materials called Lama. Lama, originally developed at ILM, has been a production mainstay there for several years. Notably, the announcement highlights that “the shading system provides RenderMan’s first step towards a deep MaterialX integration”.

In addition, RenderMan 24 boasts a new toolset for creating non-photorealistic renders, dubbed RenderMan Stylized Looks. It also introduces OSL support for GPU rendering, streamlined support for the ACES color management system, live statistics, advancements in surface realism, and a complete rewrite of RenderMan for Blender.
