The box office saw some exciting developments this weekend, with a record-breaking video game adaptation and continued dominance from an established blockbuster.

Avengers: Endgame maintained its stronghold at the box office for a third consecutive week, earning an estimated $63 million domestically and an additional $102 million internationally. This brings its cumulative total to $723 million domestically and $2.48 billion globally.
However, audiences also embraced Warner Bros.’ POKÉMON Detective Pikachu, which achieved a record-breaking opening for a video game adaptation. The action-adventure film, directed by Rob Letterman and featuring Ryan Reynolds as the voice of the title character, garnered $58 million domestically and $112 million internationally, resulting in a total opening weekend of $170 million. This domestic opening surpasses the previous record set by Lara Croft Tomb Raider in 2001, which debuted with $47.7 million.
STX Entertainment’s UglyDolls experienced a significant decline, falling to 7th place in the weekend rankings with $3.9 million, resulting in a two-week domestic total of $14.2 million. The film also secured an additional $1.6 million overseas.
Fox Searchlight’s Tolkien, released in a limited capacity, took in a disappointing $2.1 million, while Marvel’s Captain Marvel remained in the top ten, generating another $1.8 million domestically and achieving a global cumulative total of $1.12 billion.
