3ds Max 2024.1 Released: New Features & Enhancements Unveiled

3ds Max 2024.1 released

Autodesk has unveiled the release of 3ds Max 2024.1, bringing a collection of new features and enhancements to its existing toolkit.

The update introduces significant improvements to the Boolean Modifier. A new caching method boosts loading times of Boolean scenes by up to seven times. Additionally, the Boolean Modifier now fully supports smoothing groups, along with both specified and explicit normals on input Boolean operands, effectively processing and incorporating normal data into the resulting meshes produced by the modifier.

The Array Modifier also sees substantial updates, including new Array By Element methods. These provide users with enhanced control over element arrangement. Previously, when a source object contained multiple elements and Array By Element was enabled, each element was randomly used as a clone. Now, two new Array By Element methods allow for precise control over element arrangement. A new ‘Variation’ parameter has been added, enabling users to adjust the angle of clones within phyllotactic spirals. Furthermore, new parameters for the Phyllotaxis Distribution Method offer greater control over randomization.

A major user interface enhancement in 3ds Max 2024.1 is the ability to create custom defaults through context menus. This allows users to define their own default settings for various interface elements, including spinners, check boxes, radio buttons, text fields, drop-down menus, and colors.

For modelers and animators, there are updates to the Copy and Paste Animation commands, streamlining the workflow and enabling direct object or modifier parameter operations from the main UI or controllers in the Track View.

The Smart Extrude workflow now incorporates polygon smoothing and enhanced normal support, allowing for a more refined end result.

Several updates to spline modeling have been introduced, aimed at creating a smoother workflow. Significant performance increases have also been implemented for the VertexPaint Modifier, FFD Modifiers, and the Slate Material Editor.

Autodesk has incorporated several improvements to the physical camera, color management, and customizable scrollbar sizes. The Autodesk Translation Framework (ATF) importer now supports NX 2212, SolidEdge 2023, and SolidWorks 2023.

Finally, the release includes MAXtoA 5.6.2.0 for Arnold 7.2.1.1, introducing an updated AOV manager, automatic Cryptomatte setup, and the ability to set Crypto Asset tags on objects.
