3ds Max Crashes with Octane? Fixes and Workarounds for Render Issues

3ds Max 2020 crashes immediately when rendering with Octane renderer

Causes:

Texture bitmaps being pulled from mapped network drives may cause time-out issues during the “geometry processing” part of the Octane render, potentially leading to render crashes.

3ds Max may disappear immediately without generating a Customer Error Report (CER).

Solution:

To address these issues, consider the following steps:

  1. Utilize the File > Archive Function or the Command Panel > Utilities > Resource Collector menu to collect and zip all bitmap assets used in the scene.
  2. Unzip these files to a folder on the local PC.
  3. Use the 3ds Max File > References > Asset Tracking Toggle menu to re-path the scene bitmap assets to the local PC folder.
