Autodesk has released the latest update for 3ds Max.
3ds Max 2020.2 introduces an updated Sketchup importer, built upon the Autodesk Translation Framework, which supports all Sketchup versions. This is a significant improvement as the previous importer had a constraint, only supporting Sketchup up to version 2014.
The Chamfer modifier sees another enhancement in this release with added corner mitering types: Patch and Radial. These new types offer better resolution with their quadrilateral intersections than older versions. Other improvements include the possibility to use Invert and Open options for all miter types along with a new vertex chamfering implementation that respects any segment count or depth set by the user.
Users will also find several new chamfer options have been added to Editable Poly, including Uniform, End Bias, Radial Bias, Tension, and Depth.
Animation and performance have seen improvements, specifically with key creation, in Trackview, the Slate UI, and file reset functionality.
Also available in this release is a new Viewport Background mode, allowing users to automatically adopt the environment background. The traditional gradient fill is presented if the environment background is set to black. Image-based lighting is now enabled automatically when an environment is active, removing the need to add a skylight for this function. Additional display updates include support for the Physical material’s roughness parameter in Realistic mode and upgraded shadows.
